Before we begin ...

In order to back-up and run other tools which will be required to configure the Nexus 7 tablet, you will need to:

  • Be able to connect your Nexus 7 tablet to a PC using the supplied USB cable (which also plugs into the power adapter).

  • Know which model Nexus 7 you have (2012 or 2013).

  • Know which version tablet you have either Wi-FI only or Mobile (Wi-Fi + 4G).

  • Be able to download and install a program to your PC (sorry Macs not supported)

  • Make sure the tablet is fully charged (at least 75%)

  • Read each step fully and carefully and go slowly.  Most problems result from failing to follow precise details, so attention is paramount.
If you are tired, it's late, or you are likely to be interrupted; it's better to wait until you are in a better position to maintain focus.

  • Be prepared to take notes as you go.  If something is not clear, make a note and give your feedback

An outline of what we will do ...

  1. Enable Developer Mode on Nexus 7

  2. Download and install Nexus Root Toolkit (NRT) to your PC

  3. Configure Nexus Root Toolkit and create first Android backup

  4. Unlock and Root tablet, and create Nandroid backup with Custom (TWRP) recovery

  5. Install CyanogenMod USB Host custom ROM

  6. Configure and Update Settings

  7. Create second Nandroid backup

  8. Install Apps from Google Playstore

The following instructions explain how to compete these 8 steps in detail.   To make it easier to follow, we will follow the numbering convention N.n where N = the macro steps listed above and n = the substeps.
